The Brief

Vintage Watch Company is based in Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly – London. It had a site for many years and wished to upgrade the design while also being able to manage the watch database. The original move was due to a need for greater support for the business, because it received a lot of traffic and wanted to ensure all visitors found what they needed quickly. This then ensured users who called the brand knew exactly what they wanted and removed any time wasters.

The Solution

The website needed both a visual update and an improvement in functionality to increase user retention. The previous site used very small images to keep the site light and expose as many products as possible.

Space Galleon recommended the use of larger images that could be automatically resized and optimised for a client when using the content management system. This removed the need for graphical software to prepare images for the website.

We also removed the need for pagination of the watch database. Previously, trying to list all the products on the site on to a single page was a very slow process because of the large number of products to be displayed.

Space Galleon reverted the site to a single page to display the database, but introduced staggered loading. This meant that, as a user scrolled down the page and neared the end, the system would trigger the download of the next set of products. This ensured the product listing was fast and removed the lag time by only loading a certain number of products at a time. The user would not realise the whole database did not load because, by the time they reached the bottom, the next set of products would be ready to view.

The end result was an increase in traffic and user retention.
